For those planning to study in France and considering it as part of a longer-term path.

Conditions of receipt

Admission letter from a certified French educational institution
Proof of financial resources (minimum €877.50/month for applications submitted from 1 August 2026)
Arranged accommodation in France
Valid medical insurance coverage

Receive admission and complete the Études en France / Campus France procedure where it applies.
Submit the long-stay student visa application with proof of enrolment, resources, accommodation and insurance.
After arrival, validate the VLS-TS online within 3 months.
Apply online for renewal between 4 and 2 months before expiry; enrolment, resources and the genuine, serious nature of the studies are reviewed.
After the first year, an eligible student may receive a multi-year permit covering the remaining study cycle.
After a French master’s degree or equivalent, an eligible graduate may apply for a one-year job-search / business-creation permit.
First D visa: 1 year
First residence permit: 2–4 years
After 5 years: student status alone does not directly grant a 10-year resident card or citizenship; a change to an eligible status, such as Employee or Talent, is required.

Student status does not automatically give a spouse or children dependent residence status; each family member needs an appropriate visa or permit.
